Dare To Dream….Then Do It!! Chapter 2


All right everyone, I hope that you have read the introduction and first chapter and wrote down your own personal Dreams.  Today we are going over chapter 2 and it is about believing in yourself.  So let’s jump in shall we.

Confidence…..what does Webster’s Dictionary have to say about this word?  Confidence:

  1. a feeling or belief that you can do something well or succeed at something
  2.  a feeling or belief that someone or something is good or has the ability to succeed at something
  3. the feeling of being certain that something will happen or that something is true

Did you notice that in the first two definitions the word SUCCEED is used and the third definition is a belief that IT WILL HAPPEN.  So many times we cut ourselves SHORT, by not having CONFIDENCE in ourselves.  We all have been given a gift and a talent that is unique to ONLY us. It is something that will help attribute to the better of oneself AND of those around us.  Yet most of us, MYSELF included, have a hard time saying what we are good at or what we feel is a great quality about ourselves.  We are quick to tell the negative things about ourselves, but slow to describe the good.  So Les Brown encourages us to ask ourself 4 questions to boost self-approval and confidence.

  1. “What are your gifts? What is it that you do well? If you have good health acknowledge it.  Be thankful if your family and your friends love you.”
  2. “What are FIVE things you like about yourself?  This can be your appearance and/or qualities such as punctuality, honesty, and a loving spirit.”
  3. “What people make you feel special? These individuals inspire something within you. What is it?”
  4. “What moment of personal triumph do you remember? Take a moment to recall it.”

We need to stop focusing on the negative things in our lives and focus on the positive.  It is a law, “What we meditate on is what we become.”  It is said to be as strong of a law as Newton’s law about gravity. “What goes up must come down, so is true about our thoughts, what we think becomes our reality.”  The apostle Paul wrote this: “Whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things re just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.” Philippians 4:8

We all make mistakes and we choose what to do with those mistakes.  We either choose to learn from them and move on, or we can build “monuments” to them. Rose Kennedy states, “Early in life, I decided that I would not be overcome by events. My philosophy has been that regardless of the circumstances, I shall not be vanquished, but will try to be happy.  Life is  not easy for ANY of us.  But it is an continual challenge, and it is up to us to be cheerful—and to be strong, so that those who depend on us may draw strength from our example.” I love that quote.  The second chapter tells the story of how Arnold Palmer had a challenging hole in the 1961 Open, so bad that they actually built a monument at that hole that states how many shots it took him to complete the hole.  Could that have been the embarrassment of his life and he quit, yes, but it wasn’t he chose to continue on.  Every great golfer chooses to put that kind of shot behind them and tries again on the next hole.

All too often we let that “one bad hole” determine our future.  We replay it over and over in our minds.  We don’t move past it, but rather we feed the negative thoughts in our mind until they completely stop us and by doing that we have made them (the negative thoughts) our reality.  So today I am encouraging you to be CONFIDENT in yourself.  Be confident in the person that God made you to be, and be confident with the gifts and talents that you have been given so that you may SUCCEED in pursuing your dreams because YOU CAN DO IT!! YOU CAN BE SUCCESSFUL!

Homework:  For 24 hours EVERY time A negative thought comes into your mind or starts to come out of your mouth STOP it IMMEDIATELY and replace it with something POSITIVE.  Bob Rosella says, “If you don’t want to get into positive thinking, that’s okay.  Just eliminate all the negative thoughts from your mind, and whatever’s left will be fine.  

Second part of your homework is to think about your dreams and really think about achieving them and what that will be like. What does that mean for you and for your family.  What will you do?  Where will you go?  What do you want to do once you have achieved this dream? And then think about all the little steps it may take to get there but how awesome it will be once you have achieved and accomplished your Dreams.
